The national SFI test · courses B, C and D

The SFI test: how it works

The national test in SFI (Swedish for immigrants) exists for courses B, C and D. It has four parts: reading, listening, writing and speaking. To pass, you need at least 6 of 8 points.

Free. The app explains in English; the practice itself is in Swedish.

This is not an official test. We wrote the practice questions ourselves, in the style of the national test. The real test questions are secret.

Hi! I’m the professor. Here I explain how the test works. Further down you can try one reading question from each course. The questions are in Swedish, just like in the real test.

Four parts

The test is compulsory at the end of courses B, C and D, and you take it at your school. It has four parts, and each part tests one skill. On the test the parts have Swedish names:

Course by course

The test looks a little different for courses B, C and D. The texts get longer and harder with each course.

Läsa (reading)

B
Short everyday texts: text messages, notices, ads and schedules.
C
Longer texts: timetables, charts, emails and posts. Choose the word that fits in a text.
D
Letters to the editor, fact texts and interviews. Some answers are between the lines.

Höra (listening)

B
Short conversations, messages and instructions.
C
Longer conversations and phone messages: why is the person calling?
D
Discussions, news and longer stories.

Skriva (writing)

B
One text about yourself or something you have done.
C
One text that tells a story, describes or explains.
D
Two texts: one personal and one more formal.

Tala (speaking)

B
A conversation with the examiner.
C
Two tasks: one with the examiner and one with another student.
D
Two tasks: one with the examiner and a discussion with another student.

Based on Stockholm University’s follow-up reports on the 2024 tests. Stockholm University makes the tests on behalf of Skolverket, the Swedish National Agency for Education.

How the points work

Each part gives 0 or 2 points, so the most you can get is 8. When a part has two tasks, each task gives 1 point. That applies to writing in course D and to speaking in courses C and D.

The test result is G (godkänt, passed) or I (inte godkänt, not passed). For G you need at least 6 points, and you must have taken every part. So you can pass even if one part goes badly, but it is best to aim for all four.

How many right answers you need in reading and listening is not public; the limit is set for each version of the test. In Svensklärare’s practice tests you need 70 percent for 2 points. That is our own choice, not a rule of the test.

The test is not the same as your grade. Your teacher grades the course and looks at everything you have done, but must give the test result special weight.

Are there old tests to practise with?

No. The national SFI tests are confidential under the Swedish Public Access to Information and Secrecy Act (chapter 17, section 3 c). Skolverket reuses each test for several years, and the secrecy lasts as long as a test is in use. The tests in use now will be reused until 2032–2036. So there are no official old tests to practise with. Be careful with sites that claim to offer “old SFI tests” as PDFs.

What you can use instead:

Which part is hardest?

It differs from person to person, but the statistics show a pattern. Stockholm University has followed up the tests from 2024:

So it pays to practise writing. Our page about the writing part (in Swedish) has a task and a model text for each course.

Is there a test for course A?

No. There is no national test for course A. Svensklärare still has a short practice test for course A, so you can see whether you are ready for course B.

What changes in 2027

From 2027, SFI gets new syllabuses and new national tests. They apply to courses that start after 31 December 2026. If you started your course before that, the old syllabus still applies to that course.

Skolverket has not yet published what the new tests will look like. The practice here follows the format of the tests used in 2026. We will update this page when there is more information.

Try one reading question per course

Three short texts, one for each course. The texts and questions are in Swedish, as in the test; the explanations are in English. Pick an answer and you will see at once whether it is right.

Sms från en kompis

Hej! Ska vi ses på lördag? Jag kan inte på förmiddagen, för då jobbar jag. Men kl. 14 är jag ledig. Vi kan ta en fika på kaféet vid stationen. Svara senast på fredag! /Dana

1När kan Dana träffas på lördag?

Show the answer

Right answer: kl. 14. Dana works in the morning, ”men kl. 14 är jag ledig” (but at 2 pm I’m free). Friday is only the last day to reply.

Show the answer

Right answer: Simma i utomhusbadet med samma kort. The pool is closed in July, but the notice says that your annual card works at the outdoor pool in Ekbacken. The new pool for children is something that is being built during the renovation.

Show the answer

Right answer: Att cyklisterna inte tar hänsyn till dem som går. The pensioner says that the cyclists ”kör för fort förbi oss som promenerar” (ride too fast past those of us who walk). It isn’t said outright that they are inconsiderate, but that is the point. It is the number of cyclists that has grown by a third, not the number of walkers.

Practise part by part (in Swedish)

Practise the whole test

The app has a practice test for each course with all four parts: reading questions, conversations to listen to, writing tasks and speaking practice. After each part you see what you missed and why. The account is free.

The app explains in English; the practice itself is in Swedish.
